“Health Foods” to Avoid

With today’s marketing it can be confusing to find and purchase truly healthy foods. Often, foods that are traditionally thought to be good for us have added ingredients and have been processed in a manner that is not ideal for the human body. Pay special attention to the following foods the next time you buy groceries.
1. Yogurt: Homemade yogurt can do wonders for your digestive tract and overall well being. However, yogurt from the grocery store often contains a large amount of sugar and artificial colors that detrimental to good health. Seek out plain organic yogurts with the least amount of ingredients possible. Top with fresh berries and flax seeds for a nutritious snack.
2. Instant Oatmeal: Instant oatmeal is far more processed than it’s rolled or steel-cut counterparts. It scores around an 85 on the glycemic index, making the blood sugar level more difficult for the body to manage.
3. Trail Mix: Trail mix is a general term and pre mixed blends often contain unhealthy ingredients such as salted nuts, candy, and processed grains. Make your own trail mix blend with minimally processed nuts and fruit.
4. Smoothies: Often loaded with sugar, store-bought smoothies are not good for your health. Be sure to read the label before purchasing. For a healthy and less expensive alternative, make your smoothies at home.
5. Sports Drinks: Electrolytes help the body maintain a good fluid balance. Though sports drinks contain electrolytes, they often contain a slew of harmful ingredients as well. It is easy to make your own natural electrolyte drink. See the recipe below!
